Taking you to the Next Level in Surgery!

Jennifer Yu, MD, MPHS, General Surgery Residency Program Director

Welcome to the General Surgery Residency at Washington University School of Medicine! Our program provides a comprehensive and innovative residency experience designed to train skilled, knowledgeable, and compassionate surgeons. We emphasize the integration of a robust clinical practice, scientific inquiry, and professional development to ensure a well-rounded educational foundation in academic surgery.

Our mission is to deliver surgical training with unmatched depth and breadth of clinical expertise in the context of flexible training structures tailored to meet the needs of our trainees. As an originator and participant in FIST and early specialization tracks, we aim to provide unique and adaptable pathways through general surgery, and residents will work with world-renowned faculty across the expanse of subspecialties who are dedicated to excellence in clinical training and through basic science, translational, and clinical research opportunities. Our residents are able to take full advantage of multiple professional development and advanced degree programs across the institution, often with financial support. A primary focus of our program is to create an individualized experience for each resident within a supportive community, promoting a strong sense of belonging amongst our faculty and trainees. This holistic approach to the surgical training paradigm is what makes our General Surgery Residency program exceptional.

As the General Surgery Residency Program Director, I am thrilled to welcome you to WashU Medicine and strongly encourage you to explore our website to find out more about the incredible team and surgical education experience that we have built here. You will find information about what makes the Department of Surgery renowned through over a century of innovation in training as well as why our residents are absolutely outstanding, consistently setting the bar for the future of academic surgery.

Our residents have a direct impact on every domain within the program, from curriculum and simulation development to leadership and program evaluation.  Mentorship in training begins from the very start, when each new resident joins a mentorship “family”, encompassing members from every resident class and faculty as well, fostering camaraderie and social engagement.  We are incredibly proud of our trainees, and the vast majority of our chief residents pursue and successfully match into advanced fellowship training in their fields of choice, graduating with case volumes far surpassing board requirements.

We are proud to be one of the leading surgical residency programs in the nation and are deeply committed to maintaining this excellence in serving the St. Louis community and beyond. We welcome all inquiries about our program and look forward to the opportunity to help you advance in your surgical career!
