2018-2019 Division of General Surgery Faculty and House Officers

Training surgical residents who are the future leaders of academic surgery is the most important thing we do at the Washington University School of Medicine Department of Surgery. There is a unique commitment by each of the faculty to teach and mentor residents, whether this is in the operating room, the office or the laboratory.

The Department of Surgery has a unique residency committee composed of faculty as well as residents. In addition to making the residents’ schedule of rotations, this committee is responsible for assigning mentors, reviewing resident performance and, especially, reviewing faculty performance in resident education. I am proud of this commitment on the part of our faculty because I have seen it work. We are constantly trying to do things better, and this important interaction not only makes for better resident education, but a much more collegial and supportive atmosphere.
