Program Description

The Diversity Sub-Internship Program is designed to give students with a diverse background the experience of rotating as a surgical sub-intern at Washington University in St. Louis Department of Surgery. The sub-intern will function in the role of a surgical intern and will be required to attend all conferences including core curriculum, morbidity and mortality conference, rotation-based clinical case conferences and simulation lab experiences with the house staff.

Who Should Apply

The Program is open to minority applicants who belong to groups that have been traditionally disadvantaged, underrepresented, or inadequately supported in medical training. We seek applications from racial minorities from historically underrepresented in the health profession including African American, American Indian, Alaska Native, Hispanic American and Pacific Islander. We also seek applications from sexual and gender minorities such as those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/gender nonconforming, queer/questioning, or intersex. Finally, we seek applications from students whose pathway to medical training includes substantial personal or financial adversity. The criteria under which the application is submitted need not be explicitly stated nor do these represent mutually exclusive categories.

Students should apply to VSLO prior to, or at the time of, their application to this program. Therefore, students must be enrolled in their final year of medical school in good academic standing at an LCME-accredited medical school, and have completed all required core clerkships. Students will be accepted into clinical rotations only if space is available during the preferred time period. In addition, all students must meet requirements set forth by the Washington University School of Medicine for all visiting students.
